CO2-EOR+ in Australia: achieving low-emissions oil and unlocking residual oil resources

نویسندگان

چکیده

The petroleum industry, through the production and consumption of oil gas, contributes to global greenhouse gas emissions. However, industry’s leadership experience in underground injection storage CO2, especially CO2 enhanced recovery (CO2-EOR), which has been proposed as a possible solution reducing atmospheric levels, not well acknowledged. Unlike traditional CO2-EOR, tends be net carbon emitter due use predominantly natural rather than anthropogenic, CO2-EOR+ focuses on storing larger volume CO2. Thus only provides potential dispose anthropogenic emissions but at same time reduces reliance imported increased domestic production. Increased industry interest energy policy strategies directed and/or removing from processes reflect growing social economic impetus improve operation practices reputation. Residual zones (ROZs) below identified oil–water contacts provide an excellent target for application CO2-EOR+. They offer producible residual resource accessible large pore storage, with efforts focused converting ROZs into resources reserves. Existing fields Surat Cooper-Eromanga Basins are already placed utilise sources achieve conventional CO2-EOR metrics. these basins will hopefully allow EOR projects increase volumes stored, per incremental barrel oil, past levels (0.2–0.3 tCO2/bbl), doing so, potentially negative-emission oil.

CO2 EOR and Storage in Oil Reservoirs

CO2 EOR and Storage in Oil Reservoirs — CO2 injection into tertiary oil reservoirs has been widely accepted as an effective technique for enhanced oil recovery (EOR), and has been used by the oil industry for over 40 years. Concerns over greenhouse gas emissions are leading to the investigation and realisation of its potential as a carbon storage method in recent years. With the right reservoir...

Using Vegetation near CO2 Mediated Enhanced Oil Recovery (CO2-EOR) Activities for Monitoring Potential Emissions and Ecological Effects

CO2 mediated enhanced oil recovery (CO2-EOR) may lead to methods of CO2 reduction in the atmosphere through carbon capture and storage (CCS); therefore, monitoring and verification methods are needed to ensure that CO2-EOR and CCS activities are environmentally safe and effective. This study explored vegetation growth rate to determine potential ecological effects of emissions from CO2-EOR acti...

Emissions tradeoffs among alternative marine fuels: total fuel cycle analysis of residual oil, marine gas oil, and marine diesel oil.

Worldwide concerns about sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions from ships are motivating the replacement of marine residual oil (RO) with cleaner, lower-sulfur fuels, such as marine gas oil (MGO) and marine diesel oil (MDO). Vessel operators can use MGO and MDO directly or blended with RO to achieve environmental and economic objectives. Although expected to be much cleaner in terms of criteria pollutan...

Simulation Study of CO2-EOR in Tight Oil Reservoirs with Complex Fracture Geometries

The recent development of tight oil reservoirs has led to an increase in oil production in the past several years due to the progress in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. However, the expected oil recovery factor from these reservoirs is still very low. CO2-based enhanced oil recovery is a suitable solution to improve the recovery. One challenge of the estimation of the recovery is ...

Ultralow interfacial tension in enhanced oil recovery (EOR)

Increasing energy demands require improved methods for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). Chemical EOR methods are most promising for maximum oil recovery, but, so far, limited due to high costs of chemicals and environmental concerns. Therefore, there is a huge interest in optimizing procedures for chemical EOR that minimize the amount of chemicals needed and rely on natural compounds, thus decreasi...
